As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”Matthew 21:1-3
Who knew? I don’t think anyone really expected a donkey, with a colt, was going to be the vessel God would use to bear the King of Kings into Jerusalem. Jesus did! He specifically sent for her.
Over the years, I’ve both heard and used this account to emphasize the value of a burden bearer. Though not majestic, donkeys were a valued asset. They were burden bearers. Yes, a wonderful picture of Christ, the only One who could bear the burden of our sin.
This is a wonderful truth. However, I’d like to encourage you to see another truth. The donkey was available. As Jesus dispatched his disciples to get the donkey, He was confident the owner would immediately make her available. I believe you and I are available vessels. Why? Because we’ve surrendered our lives to Jesus.
Yes, maybe to the world we look like unlikely vessels to bear the Good News of Christ, but our owner says, “Take him!”
