What's God Doing Here?
“Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ,” 1 Corinthians 11:1. “What’s he doing here?” asked a little girl. Together with a few other families, we had invited her family over to our house for a Friday night ‘get-to-know-you’ dessert. While waiting for our guests to arrive, I was out in the driveway, practicing my obsessive-compulsive disorder of sweeping every Fall leave off the asphalt! Wondering whom she was talking about, her dad said, “What’s who doing here?” Without a moment’s hesitation she pointed at me saying, “What’s God doing here!” Some of you, who know me, are groaning to yourself, “Wow, that is a stretch, Michael mistaken for God?” Well, for once we agree. It’s hard, no impossible, for me to imagine that too. Yet, as servants of the Living God, children and adults see us standing and speaking in Christ’s stead. What a privilege. What a place of responsibility. All followers of Christ, and especially those of us in spiritual leadership, should have this desire and pursuit. Therefore, by His grace, day-by-day we seek to die to self and live for Jesus. In attitude, words, and actions our longing is for the image of Jesus to be seen and heard. May those who witness our lives and ministry say, “I see Jesus in him/her.”
