Dignified Whistling
“He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity,” 1 Tim. 3:4.
The word, manage, sounds cold… boss-like. Thankfully it doesn’t need to sound like a dictatorship. As I consider some of my secular employers, God gave me some great examples of men, who were effective servant-leaders. They managed their employees well.
One of my all-time favorite employers was Whistling Chris Halverson of Halverson’s Super Value. I was one of his bag boys and stockers. He wanted to see us do well. He also knew, as young boys, we’d be tempted to slough-off. So, whenever he came into the stockroom area, he’d start whistling. Yep, we knew he knew. We loved him for it. His managing style motivated us to do better. And from time to time, when he had to address other issues, we listened with both ears.
A ministry leader and his family are always in the spotlight… your marriage, your parenting, your whole life. Can be difficult, but it can also be an opportunity. An opportunity for God’s grace. The managing style of servant-leadership can bless your wife, your children, and the families of those in the sphere of your ministry. My advice… practice your dignified whistling skills
